time machine with network hard drive
Submitted by joachim on 16 November, 2007 - 23:27Today bought me an lacie ethernet disk mini, so it would be easy to let time machine do it's this. Because i always work on a laptop, it's uncomfortable to always run around with a mobile disk for time machine.
First when i wanted to test the disk through usb, nothing happened (have still to look for why), but when attached to my router we made contact. Now it was time to start time machine, but as a surprise for me no disk showed up.
What seems the case here is that time machine doesn't support nas or network attached drives. Only drives connected with a cable to your usb port. Damn !
After looking around on internet i found this article.
how to enable time machine on unsupported volumes => solution is
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
by reading through the comments, i know now what to expect.
Problably i'll make on random times a copy of the time machine sparsebundle, for in case something should go wrong.
But hey, better a backup like this then no backup (twice a year or something)
(now running for 2,5 hours and i assume it will take even more 5 hours)
a good reason for using usb instead of wifi ;-)
hopefully no horror stories in the near future !!
